No issue determines the media in recent weeks as much as this year’s presidential election in the United States. Opposing Hillary Clinton on the side of the Democrats and Donald Trump on the Republicans in one of the dirtiest and most scandalous election campaigns in the history of the US. It was unclear who would really make it and contrary to all assumptions Donald Trump was elected as the 45th President of the United States of America on this years 9th November. A fact that caused horror on the one hand and joy on the other hand in America and in many other parts of the world.
For me, the election result only provokes incomprehension! Because of this lack of understanding I neither wanted to comment on this topic on my blog nor on a different social media channel. I do believe if we had paid this man no attention from the outset, it would never have come this far. But as destiny wanted, I met Colin last sunday. I was on the train on my way to Berlin when he asked if he could sit down next to me. Since he spoke to me in English I asked him where he came from. He told me that he was a foreign student from the US studying in Berlin for one semester. This weekend he went to Hamburg to visit Germany’s famous harbor. He originally comes from a suburb of Seattle, now studying at the University of Washington. When I asked him about the elections, I was not aware of what was going to come next.
“We Americans are actually such a proud nation. Nevertheless, I am ashamed of our citizens as never before. We have elected a man for president who is standing in front of us telling us it’s okay to bother women sexually. And it is a shame for any man in America who has given his voice to this woman-despising man. You all put yourself on the same level. You do not only despise your wives, daughters, sisters but every other woman in this world.
And to every woman I have only a few questions to ask: How can you choose a man for president who despises you in such a way? Someone who humiliates you? Are’nt you ashamed that this man will govern and represent our country for the next years?
We have appointed a man to be the most powerful in the world, who is not only misogynic, but also extremely xenophobic. A man who quotes Adolf Hitler in his election campaign. I mean what is going to come next?
At this point I want to say that I do not think Hillary Clinton would be the optimal solution. Nevertheless, this is about basic things.
A president should be committed to his nation. He should demonstrate the respect that is also demonstrated to him. Irrespective of origin, religion, sexuality or gender. We are not just sending this man out into the world to lead politics for us. But rather to represent what we are. And to represent our values. In America law attributes each person the right to life, freedom and happiness. But he denies it. He takes away the freedom by wanting to build a wall to Mexico and deport foreigners. I’m madly disappointed about what happened in the US. I would never have expected Donald Trump to win the presidential election!! But that shows again: In America, everyone can be anything. Even the greatest idiot can become president here. “
When I asked Colin about the election, I thought he would tell me how great Donald Trump is. For pure interest I’d have liked to listen what he would have told me then. I’m glad that there are people like Colin. People who are cosmopolitan and do not judge by origin or sexuality. People who do not simply accept things but question them. And in my opinion Donald Trump’s words will remain empty as long as there are such people in this world.
